The truth about "OFF-GRID" living

Many people have an idea about living "off-Grid". The truth may be quite different. Living in a tiny cabin in interior Alaska for many of the last 20 years, I know a bit about what its really like.
here is a link to my previous video referenced in this video

23 years old, and you hit the nail on the head. I did feel like I was wasting my life when I was working 60 hours a week as a cook! I wanted something more, I want to build something cozy, make it beautiful inside and out, and have a family. Make technology a little luxury instead of it being so intrusive in my life. I find you so inspiring, I hope I get there one day.

Bushradical…Dave, the quality of your character, intelligence, expertise, common sense and humor… far exceeds the naysayers. The fact that you even took time to address their, “concerns” speaks highly. I hope you and Brooke continue sharing your hard working and joyful lifestyle with us…Your vids inspire and enlighten all of us who are awake. I am sorta addicted to both of your channels. What you offer is highly worthwhile and I know you don’t need any of us to tell you or Brooke that. Thanks so very much. In Jesus name, indeed. I'm new to you and your wife's videos. Loved watching them all. I like being outdoors. I like getting creative and building with wood - it keeps me sane in a largely insane world being able to do just those little things. Your honesty and capacity for the graft, to get you where you are, is more than evident to ANYONE who has even the SLIGHTEST appreciation of what you guys have worked so hard to achieve. Consequently, I was literally laughing my head off - when I wasn't shaking it in utter disbelief that is - that there are clearly, genuine eejits (...I'm Scottish but please don't hold that against me) out there, who would take offence at how you cook bacon and eggs! Honestly? They're obviously watching the wrong content. ANY negative comment on what you guys are doing defies any reasonable logic - so to them I would just like to say, 'Wobble off and renew your subscription to My 600Ibs Life'. But exceptionally well done brother in answering the brain donor comments. Keep up the great work and content.

You can simplify your life without going to the extreme, to be totally off grid, unless it becomes necessary. To me, the key is preparing, testing and being ready if/when it comes to that point. Until that happens, I intend to enjoy my creature comforts, since there's no reason not to. I'm a 70 yr old, female, living in northern Mi on wooded acreage that has a mobile home, pole barn, and shed on it (I've also added a small travel trailer). I have two wells on my property, but also have earth straws to be able to turn them into hand pumped wells (if no electric) and a river nearby. To me, this is heaven on earth and I love it! I'm in good health, but not dumb enough to think I can handle building a cabin on my own, so I chose other ways to fulfill those needs. (I have a 50 yr old son, but he knows mom likes to do things on her own.) I bought this property a year before I retired in 2019 (took me 4 years to find the right place and I paid cash) and sold my site-built house in 2020. I periodically shut everything down for a few days or so, to test my systems, to see what needs tweaking and I see any disruption in power as an opportunity to do the same. I have backups for my backups and I mix modern backups, such as solar, power stations, generators, chainsaws and propane, with old school backups, such as oil, kerosene, charcoal, handsaws and wood. Some of my preps are over 100 years old and still work as intended. Some people will never get it, no matter how it's explained to them, but for those of us who do get it, my hat's off to you!

I think you and Brooke are wonderful and I'm so glad I can watch your videos. Can I live your lifestyle? No but your example makes me strive to live better than I do.....just watching Brooke has helped me to see how important it is to get outside and enjoy it.......oh my gosh there is more to life than consuming all the junk thrown at us....You two are awesome..........if someone doesn't like you they just need to quit watching and get a life! Keep sharing pls.!

There can be a lot of negativity in the world, the internet seems especially vulnerable to it. I appreciate your realistic take on the lifestyle you and your family have chosen for yourselves. It's a great big wonderful world, which we each can learn a lot from. It shows a lot of respect that you've chosen to address people's reactions in both an honest and kind way. That should be a part of everyone's lifestyle choice. I've been drawn to you and your wife's videos because they remind me of how my grandfather lived. He was born in 1900, his family moved a lot because his father traded Appaloosa ponies. For a time they lived in a covered wagon and they were, as most people of that time, very self sufficient. I learned a lot from him and my other grandparents, a respect for hard work, developing our own skills and appreciating the skills of others. I've always tried to respect people in their own choices, it's really not that hard. Thank you for this video and for what you so kindly share!

Wow Dave it amazes me that you even have to come on here and explain your life much less what off grid means …I think that no matter what your doing for yourself there will be those who feel the need to tear it apart and find fault….I admire all that you and Brooke have done and wish I could explore this way of life.

Hey Dave, I stumbled upon your videos by chance and I really enjoy them. I do tv broadcasting for a living and the quality of your videos are really on point. They don't have very intricate shots or fancy editing but their simplicity and framing are really good. Most videos like yours on TRpost don't have a decent sequence, editing, frame work, and VO's.. your narration is outstanding.. You should really be proud of your work, not to mention your craftsmanship.. pretty amazing to watch. Bottom line is that whatever you're doing you're doing cause it gives you joy and happiness and that's the way you want to do it, who really cares about what everyone else thinks. I know how much work it is to put those videos together.. I hope you make a lot of money with those.. keep up the good work.

In the 80's, my grandma lived by herself in the mountains about 15 minutes outside a very small town called Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal at the time was considered really remote for those of us living 50 or 60 miles away near Washington D.C. To me, it was remote enough. At night it was super quiet and no light pollution from any city, so you could see all the stars in the sky. My grandma had one neighbor in a house right next to hers, but the next neighbors were a quarter mile down the road. She had electricity and running water (from her own well), but she stocked up food to limit her trips into town. She used to freeze most of her food to make it last. So, my grandma wasn't "off the grid" or living as a caveman, but it was simple enough and remote enough so she could enjoy the benefits, but still get to town in 15 minutes if need be. I think most people can do the same as well. You don't have to choose between city apartment living or a Survivor man type of lifestyle. There are many ways to live and find your own happiness.

I live 15 miles outside of Front Royal on 2 acres, Virginia a 9/10's of a mile up from the Low Water Bridge of Bentonville still in Warren County! I moved here in 1998, from Lake Ridge, Virginia 23 miles outside of Washington D.C! What a small world! My husband works IT online for a credit union, and I have been an at home mother of 4 children. We raise chickens but are not "off-grid"! Xoxo

"The pigs and chickens would roll off..." made me laugh so hard. Don't mind any negativity. You and Brooke are just doing fine and each of us has the own responsibility for living our own dreams (or decide against it for whatever reasons). You are not there to live other people's expectations. I enjoy both of your videos and am very fond about your wife's channel. We all can find our little nature islands, no matter how often and how intense, just nobody can make me do the first step. I have to do myself. And is it not wonderful being able to switch between offgrid and a life, where you enjoy more comfort? Why should it be either / or when it can be "and".

Marvelous! I appreciate your relaxed and self-assured approach to this - shrugging off other people's expectations of what "real" off-grid living "is" or "means." I enjoy your videos, and much of that enjoyment comes from seeing how much you and your wife get joy from living as you choose to do. Bravo :)

Hi Dave, I found your channel through your wife's channel. When I was a teenager my family lied in an original log house from the 1800's. It was all one room, except for a small back porch. It had a bar that separated the kitchen from the rest of the cabin. We had an area for the dining table and across from that was a tiny living area. the rest of the log house was sleeping area. All six of of slept there. My sister and I shared an army bunkbed and so did my 2 brothers. My parents had their bed in the back corner. At night when we went to bed we all talked to each other. We had an outhouse in the back by a small barn where we had a milk cow and chickens. We cooked on an old cook stove and heated the log house with a wood heater. We only had cold running water from a well. The old modern convenience we had was electricity. It may not be "remote living" for some people, but until you live it yourself you can't judge. We grew very close as a family when we lived there. We washed out close in the back yard with an old wringer washer my dad hooked up with batteries. We ung our clothes on the clothes line. I don't regret my parents decision at all for moving there when our home burned in a fire. For showers/baths, the kids had showers at school after P.E. My parents bated in galvanized tubs we used with the wringer washer. It was a simple time in our lives we all remember fondly. :o)

I find your videos very therapeutic. Most of us are sold on getting into a 30 year mortgage. I like the part where you can live off the land. Have something that's paid for and not have to worry about your next month's payment. Plus you feel proud of something you built your self. Yes, it is satisfying. Plus being in touch with nature. I feel one could use modern technology. Such as solar panels. You don't have to give up everything. I like what you do. Keep doing it. I love the little cabin with the green roof. I call it the "guaranteed" not to leak cabin. I wish I could have seen the way you built that. At any rate, I love your videos. Remember. You can't please everyone. Reminds me of the old times, when people were good to one another..

I'm 66 and want to get a tiny home to take to the woods or mnts. Or some off-grid community... just to simplify life and be closer to nature. The idea of being outside more is the draw for me. The home would be for heat. Sleep. Safety maybe at times, (storms) but for the most part I'd be outside like camping ...building fires, hunting , fishing, hiking....whatever I can do for my old age

Dave, thanks sharing this video. I understand where you are coming from and being around the Amish, I’m from Ohio and when I was a kid growing up my youth group stayed with them and help build a barn. I am now living and working in Romania and I am 52 years old and My first true experience in a log cabin was here in Romania built by one of my friends and I felt that peace quiet and relaxing feeling you get living off grid. There is no power going to the cabin just a generator and propane tanks to help heat the water and cook. What I am trying to say thanks for your videos, I enjoy them and you teach me and my family a lot. Keep up with the good work you do!

Ive watched several of your video's and really enjoy them. Thank you for that. And I want to say you've got it spot on talking about off grid living. 'Off Grid' is a term that popped up about 30 years ago and all it meant at 'that' time was to be disconnected from the Grid... the power Grid. That's what the Grid is... It is the system of electricity that flows thru the US from sea to shining sea. Then 'off grid' popped up in some movie phrase and then off grid became a term for removing yourself completely from civilization. People have their own definition of off grid so you see, you describe it perfectly and those commenters that throw all the negativity your way need to grow the F up. They have no idea.. Off Grid does not mean total self reliance... Total self reliance is total self reliance.

O my gosh, Dave, you hit the nail right on the head! A huge difference between 'off grid' and 'self sufficient '... We have a self sufficient farm, but definitely not off grid. So many people are confused about these two terms, and in their minds they expect a Grizzly Adam's lifestyle...not so! Keep up the great work, and remember, most of these people are unlearned when it comes to this free choice of a lifestyle.

Recently found Brooke's channel by accident, and am starting to consume your content as well. It makes me sad that you felt the need to make this video - people can be idiots (especially in comment sections on the internet). I grew up on 40 acres - we weren't off grid but certainly were self-sufficient outside of power and sewer. I miss the hard work of that life (most of my adult life I've worked corporate gigs), and your guys' content is motivating me to buy land and build (def need to hire that out for the most part) and get back to being more self-sufficient than I am today. Thanks for sharing what you guys do and how you live - I'm envious and admire it all at the same time.

I sure am glad so many people know how you're supposed to live. I think you and your wife are some of the most genuine honest people that I've come across in my lifetime. One thing I read recently is the 35 or so lessons that this one older lady had learned throughout lifetime. Don't know if you saw this but I'd search it out cuz it is awesome. One of her lessons was, "don't worry what other people think about you because it's none of your business anyway." To all the naysayers I would say what Bon Jovi said, 'Its my life's' I think y'all have chosen the lifestyle you want to live. Y'all haven't gotten too extreme because you're not interested in that. I haven't felt like you're trying to fool anybody. I think you just enjoying life and doing what you want to do and the way you want to do it. Some people want to live the extreme life. I think if I came and watch the video of that I wouldn't be interested in it but I certainly am interested in what you've presented along with your wife. I sold my house and I live half the year in Colombia South America and the other half in America. The Airbnb lifestyle is great here in Colombia but when I get back to Virginia the prices are so high I can't afford it anymore. I am retired and I only have so much money. Now I do humanitarian disaster relief work on my own when there's a major earthquake or hurricane in poor countries. I pay my own way and I use a great deal of my own money to buy temporary shelter and food and clean water for the people who've lost all. Because of the Airbnb prices in America I've decided I've got to find a cheaper alternative when I stay in the USA. That simple house you and Brooke built with the big picture window may very well be just what I needed to know about. I am strongly considering doing the same. I don't think your wife could have picked any better colors. You certainly have taught me a lot in the past week since I saw the first video. Thank You Both.

I’m really sorry to hear that people judge when they don’t even know you, and they don’t even know the whole story. Just know Dave, that their opinions do NOT define You or who you are as a person. When they can’t find anything wrong with you, they create it. Their judgments does not define who you are, it defines who they are! I never waste my time trying to explain who I am to those that are committed to misunderstanding me, because their opinions are not my reality-I know the Truth!* So many assume, yet so little know. Just know that my friend. That is one thing I’ve had to acknowledge & accept about putting myself out there on Social Media; you’re always going to get a couple of haters, or people that misunderstand you. Unfortunately, it happens to everyone; even to the kindest-most humblest people. Anyways, I just want to say that You & Brooke both have completely and positively changed, inspired, and impacted my Life, along with so many other’s out there!🥰I love the Outdoors too, and I have talked to my boyfriend about creating a beautiful small little cabin like yours here in Wisconsin-All thanks to You & Brooke! In fact, I haven’t seen one negative comment whenever I watch your videos. You & Brooke both truly are a blessing here on earth, and I just want to say Thank-you for all that you have done to inspire and help those like myself dream and help make our dreams possible and come true-all thanks to you both!😊👍 Please keep-up these incredibly wonderful videos of your amazing outdoor adventures.😍Thank-you! #Subscribed

One day I want to live off grid my way, which will be similar to your way. No electric bill, semi-isolated and close enough to shopping and medical facilities. Right now I live in a small town and the peace and quiet have been a source of much needed healing. I don't have cable, yet am going to school full time online. live about 10 miles from a pt job in another small town, and live about 25 miles from a small city 25,000 population where there is shopping and places to buy wood for my woodworking hobby. I would love to have propane, solar, and wind powered home and maybe a wood stove in a small cabin or prefab tiny home. Keep living off grid your way.

This is the most logical, real-life, common sense, no BS vid on “roughing it” I’ve ever seen. Well done, sir

I'm 25 and I've worked in construction for the last few years but have experience from concrete to framing to finish carpentry and cabinetmaking. I've done remodels before and it's a blast. I spend every weekend in the mountains, so I've been dreading the thought of buying a home here in the city. Man, your videos give me a bit of inspiration for buying some land and building my first home somewhere outside of town in the hills or mountains. Thanks for the depth and detail of your videos. I know I have the skills to build, remodel, furnish, and trick out a place if I simply have the land and information. You're a blessing and you're the first kick in my rear to do what I've always dreamed of. I want to say thank you.

I grew up on a farm. I have owned my own home since I was 21. I have had rental property I have maintained. I don't believe people who are craving this lifestyle truly understand the amount of work that is required just to live. You have to work in the rain, work in the cold. It's waking up in an extremely cold home that takes hours to warm up. My Aunt lived in the mountains of North Carolina. Her dog water froze in the living room every morning. She got up at 4:30 in the morning to build a fire in her old fashioned wood stove. It took 2 hrs of wood burning for oven to get to temperature to make biscuits.

Dave, you are doing great! My hubby and I were going to buy land in Montana, but cancer took him in February 2022 and I wish we would have done this before that! I love to watch you and Brooke and I do envy you for your lifestyle! Stay true to yourself and have a great life!!!

Great video and well said. It is true that we often try to judge and critic others - it's not the way that everyone 'would' do it, or 'should' do it. It's easy to project our own ideas and views about things. I for one can appreciate what you have done for what it is - and I think it's great. You are using some technology and some conveniences for sure - and that's OK! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for posting this! I kept thinking "Amen!" to your every point because you are so right! It may well be that others are living their idea of "true off-grid" that others judge them by. You are spot-on correct, and the trolls and nay-sayers are living off-grid because they cannot comprehend. Go David & Brook!

I’ve watched a few of your videos. I happened upon your outhouse build (with your brother), and used it as guide for the one we built. It turned out awesome! … I agree with your comments here. But I think the bigger disconnect is because you’ve got this skill set most people do not have. You also touch on financial freedom. I had a farm most of my life and hired a lot of local teenagers. So many could not use a hammer, a shovel or a hoe. It was a real eye opener for them to realize how much effort it takes to earn money. To be able to get to the point where you have the choices you talk about is a stretch for a lot of people. Tools, manual labor and basic economics - you portray a grasp of those 3 things.

I totally agree with everything you said. You've explained everything living off grid in your own cottage surrounded with nature. The bottomline here is " IT A CHOICE."

Hey man, I personally love what you're doing. Remember, it's not your responsibility to live up to someone else's personal image of you.

Great video! I look forward to every video you put out. My wife and I bought property years ago out of town and we lost interest until we started watching your videos. We are tired of the city hussle and want out. Working in town is ok but the living is rough.... Thank you for sparing the time for the videos!

You don't owe anyone an explanation. As far as I'm concerned, you're living my dream. Keep doing what works for you and don't let the hate comments get to you.

I hope you find a way to live your dream. It's mine too. These videos satiate me while I figure out how to make it a reality.

Thank you Dave - I loved this video because you broke down (realistically) in a very articulate way about “Off-Grid Living”. I subscribe to your channel & Brooke’s. ❤️

I've watched this and most of your videos and what I'm really struck by is how hard you and Brook work. Initially it looked easy to build a cabin in the woods and it may be easy to build a cabin but it is not as easy it might appear. The parts of your lives we don't see it what you have to do to get to actual build. I really like watching Bushradical and Girl in the woods. A lot of hard work. Thanks for doing this video.

I have lived off grid every deer season in Northern Michigan for many years. Finally 25 years ago bought my own hunting land on a trout river. Now I am off grid for weeks at a time. I have perfected "my" off grid experience. "My" off grid is all that matters, as your off grid experience is yours and you chose to share. Thank you for that.

Great show! Having made many extensive trips to Alaska including areas much further north than Fairbanks, I loved your approach and how you spoke about each and every difference yet similarity we all need in day-to-day life. My wife and me Own a 125-year-old home on 5 acres where widow drapes are useless (privacy is a luxury to us). Your duel residence situation sounds brilliant though I confused over why you leave once the weather gets really rough. That’s the reason I totally fell in love with AK. Fairbanks is a real city yet you found solitude within a drive that’s nothing compared to big cities and endless commutes. Love your shows, but more importantly sensibilities.

love the videos, dude! You're living your life the way you want and you're happy doing it. I pray you don"t stop making videos so we can live vicariously through you, and for some of us(like me), actually take your videos into account when making the move to off-grid.

Your videos show that people can do this for real. With common sense saving and a little know-how(plus some help from videos like this). It really is possible to live like this, which most people would be far happier if they did. Thank you for everything you do!

This is how him and his wife are living, he's not saying to clone his life into yours, he's giving out his experience and his knowledge, each person designs their own happiness and their own version of off grid that is best for them, it's comforting to have someone who has experience show you how to build your foundation.

There's always going to be trolls. I would totally live off the grid. I would love the quiet and peace of having no neighbors near by. Would love to be among nature. Would love for it to happen for us one day. Sadly though I don't think it will ever happen for me. My health issues would be in the way. Who knows though, less stress might help me. Love your cabin. Just started following your wife and now you. You both are so awesome ❤

Sir, I really enjoy your videos and hope you keep making them! Don’t worry about the ignorant and negative comments. Probably most of the people criticizing your “off-grid” living, are complaining from their recliner in a modern heated house. 🙄 I’m wanting to go “off-grid” as well, I’ve been working on a piece of land that my wife and I bought. Someday, we’ll build that cabin, I can’t wait. Keep up the good work, and God bless!
