A simple off grid homestead. Built from the ground up with your own hands. Thats the dream for thousands of people around the world. But, with cable TV programs and made up youtube videos, what does that look like in reality. In this video , my wife Brooke and I show the process of building an off grid homestead , start to finish, and what its actually like. Thanks for watching.
Portions of this video were provided by my wife's footage that you can see on her channel ( Girl in the Woods)'s a link to her channel.

"I like to build my own cabinets, I like it to be simple, and I like it to be cheap, but it's going to be way sturdier than the chipboard garbage you'll find at lowes." I've literally said this exact phrase myself. Great work man. Really love your cabin!

Exquisite, upbeat, relaxing, genius, fun! I enjoy your wife's videos too. You both cook on a wood burning stove alike. Nice to see a couple that complements each other with their like minded passion for nature/simplicity/ being independent of this crazy, mixed up world. Blessings to you both.

I like your philosophy. Built several structures pretty much by myself along the way, two recording studios, two shops and two renovations along with various sheds etc and many lesser projects, shelves, chifforobes, kitchen counters and it goes on, but oh, it was fun! In and amongst touring. At 76 I've slowed a bit, but can still do it if I don't rush. These days I mostly make music videos for youtube and no longer have to travel. Love your's and Brooke's channels by the way. To summarize what you said, just do it!

The forest is alive, it feels everything, understands everything. As you treat him, so he treats you. You will love him and he will love you. You treat him with warmth, and he will warm you. You will protect him, and he will save you and comfort you in difficult times. But the Forest cannot respond to evil with evil, it simply does not know how. The worst thing on his part is indifference. If the forest is indifferent to you, then you don’t love it, you don’t feel it, and it will never reveal its secrets to you. But if you love him, then it's forever. You will not be able to live without him then, longing will seize. It's like longing for a very close person or phantom pain. It seems that he left the forest for a while and not far, in general, but still you already feel that something is not right, something is missing. Yes, you can get used to it and you can even somehow live with it ... Although, no, not to live - to exist, to pull the strap, but not to live. It will no longer be possible to live. But when you return, then you will understand - you are at home, and they were waiting for you here, you are welcome, you are missed. And how good it is to finally be home!

You make it look so simple to do (even when its difficult!) and it turns out beautiful! Its a dream of mine to build a homestead in a few years and your videos are so much inspiration!
Your videos always get me through the day. I always dreamed of having my own rustic house but I'm having problem getting ideas of what it should look like. Glad I found your channel. I'm beyond happy knowing I can get inspiration from what you built and what you are going to build in the future. Also, your work are amazingly good and very realistic. Stay safe and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your contents :)

Loved this video! I'm a Pennsylvania native and I feel like our region is the go zone. Everyone always has somewhere to go and something to do. It's so hard to get anyone to slow down and enjoy the simple things that really matter. I'm guilty of it too, so I try to watch things like this video to help me stay focused on the necessities. It also helps me to teach my kids that we don't need everything society tells us we do. Love that you included your mealtime prayer! That's the most important part of all! Thank you for sharing! I hope the homestead is thriving.

You did a great job on your project ! Watched the video to the end. I’m in the process of buying some land to be able to do the same thing and your video was very helpful for some ideas of my own. The roof will be a bit different since Texas doesn’t see a lot of snow “haha” but that was a really cool way of doing the roof. I’ve been a home owner in a big city but my country roots are calling me home. Excited to build something smaller vs a large modern home.

That is really the only issue I have with some of my favorite shows (Tiny House, Building off the Grid etc...) they all feel that they MUST include some drama, some traumatic event or similar to make the show interesting. I cringe at most of the invented drama. I just want to watch people building their dream home and if something rough happens ok include it but don't make stuff up because you think we the viewers need to see drama.

The way you work reminds me a lot of my dad, he built our entire house by himself from scratch, he was an engineer but he taught himself how to build as he went, starting with sheds and eventually working his way up to brick houses. He managed to haul heavy ass wooden beams up the rafters by himself using just rope and levers and what he'd call "Egyptian engineering". I'm still to intimidated by the process to try something like this myself but eventually I hope I will.

Your videos are so fantastic and I appreciate so much your faith and can-do attitude. I really want to do something like this, but I have no training. I’m studying and I’m going to take a few classes but I was just wondering - is there any kind of reference material you like to use in case there is ever anything you run into during a build that you’re just not prepared for or trained in? Just for those once-in-a-while occurrences, so you can know that you’re not going to make a critical error in the learning process?

I’m an optometry student so I’ve been taking study breaks to watch videos like these because they’re so opposite of my life, it’s relaxing. That being said though, I always find myself worrying about your safety, like what would you do if you got hurt? Do you keep a first aid kit, have a phone that can get good service etc? Im glad to see that you wear glasses, eye protection is so so important. Take it from me, who’s taking a study break from learning how to remove things from eyes. Thank you for making these! I can’t wait to see what else you build.

Fabulous job bud. I love your videos. In my opinion the most important aspect about building your own home is motivation and stick-to-it-iveness. I'm sure most people can do it as you've explained but staying focused, motivated and not giving up is key. It's a lot of hard, back breaking work what you're doing and a lot of people are just not cut out for it. But watching you and your wife do it gives me hope that there are people that can and it's inspiring.

Pretty awesome. In Finland we have built most of the log cabins using horisontal logs for hundreds of years, but we actually have some commercially built vertical log cabins too. Vertical logs have their pros and cons compared to traditional horisontal logs, but the oldtimers in Finland didn't have such power tools and screws. Since they had only an axe + manual drill + wood stick anchors between the logs, horisontal logs were a natural choice under their constraints.

This is amazing to watch, I can imagine how much serotonin runs through ones body after finishing everything and actually starting to live there. I love watching you and Brooke build. You were talking about having roof on before walks were in. Most home builder companies do that. The roof goes on as soon as framers have it framed. I've been picking up free lumber for 40 years at new home building sites. They have massive scrap piles that are full of 2 x 4s, 2 x 6s, 2 x 12s, tyvek, shingles, all for the asking.
