The number ONE question I get asked in regards to off-grid living is "how do you make money for the things you need" The answers are in this video!

Interesting personal info. There is much to be said about a debt free lifestyle. Connie and I are also dept free as well. That fact has opened up much freedom for us as well so we can relate.

@Steve Merrill I assume you are asking this of Dave. However since you placed your question as a "reply" to my question I will throw in my two cents and Dave most likely will not see this since it is under my comment. My wife and I do have health care coverage.

It really is amazing (once you've lived this way) how little we really "need" in order to live and be happy with it. Focusing on the simple pleasures in life takes so little yet pays so much! Glad for you, Dave! What an awesome gift you and Brooke are giving your son and daughter. Enjoy! God Bless

Wise words. I'm Italian and we were once famous for savings and for avoiding debts as long as possibile... unfortunately in the last 20/30 years, more and more American consumer habits, such as debt spending, became more common...

You guys really give me the burning desire to go for it. I’ve been doing concrete for about 17 years, and my girlfriend is from Russia so she’s no stranger to work. Your wisdom in the last video I watched you had said something along the lines of you need to change your whole lifestyle it’s not about saving up to have a cabin on the side really made me feel Good and I instantly sent The video to my girlfriend. We live in Nebraska now and she’s on her way to Colorado to visit family, but we have been talking about going to Idaho possibly, And what you were doing here may be a real possibility for us, and I think the satisfaction of life gained from what you guys do is worth every bit of hard work. I appreciate your videos, and your teaching abilities as well.

My wife was cleaning houses (just solo -- no employer/company) for a living, and I learned the lesson you learned. She had some level of income security because she could never lose it all at once, like is possible with a conventional employment job (like mine).

Girl I'm 66. I started 10 years ago decluttering my life. By the time I left city life. Divorced and grown kids. I owned a car, my tools and one fork. Down to minimal interaction with monthly bills. Small cabin payment. That's it. It's easier than you think. Much more rewarding

I did that off-grid cabin life when I was younger. I was in the Canadian Militia in Artillery from 86-91 in which I worked on call-outs with regular force, and between call-outs I had a small spruce log cabin to enjoy.

Evening Dave, there’s nothing like watching skilled people doing what they do best. Having finished a little concrete myself during my tenure I can attest to how hard this work is and just how much skill is involved to achieve the required finish, first rate work there sir! As for the financial position that allows your lifestyle, I wouldn’t presume to ask! That kind of enquiry is, I think, gauche and entirely inappropriate for a stranger to ask. It’s enough for me to watch and enjoy your uploads and appreciate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to enable your endeavours on this platform. Keep the good stuff coming.

I never knew that I'd find watching three dudes pour concrete so interesting! You make a very good point in how by keeping extra expenses low, it enables you to have money for the things you actually need. It really is simple, but most of us don't realize it. A few weeks ago while I was out in Colorado, I spent a few hours soaking in a riverside hot spring. While I was there, I struck up a conversation with a young guy and his girlfriend. I guess that I would term them modern hippies. He had just recently bought a van in which to live. I told him how sometimes the simplicity of a mobile van lifestyle seems appealing to me. However, I own too many books that I don't want to get rid of in order to travel through life that unencumbered. Well, that, and I have too much outdoor gear, including handmade knives.

Bushradical that’s my plan.... after i finish building the cabins in Alaska and then sell whichever one I’m not gonna keep (two pieces of land about an eighty mile boat ride apart), I want to buy a little land in central or South America and build one there.... summer in Alaska, three month slow casual drive, three months in (Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama?), three month slow casual drive to Alaska. Repeat.

That was quite a hypnotic backdrop to have for the voice over, never knew there was so much to pouring concrete! I live on a boat, it's a simpler life with no mortgage payments so it also gives me more choice over what I do to earn money. Great video...

Thanks, Dave. You explained this better than probably anybody I've watched or talked to in person. I've got my head around off grid systems, how I can manage multiple streams of income and various work I can do, etc. If you'd be willing to talk about it on your channel, the last piece I am trying to figure out is healthcare. How do you afford exorbitant health insurance costs and/or healthcare bills?
Bushradical
Bushradical 2 yıl önce
That would depend on what your health care expenses run...it would different for everyone based on their needs. I get Asthma medicine from the doctor but never go for any other reason unless I'm bleeding out.

Thanks, Dave for sharing with us how you make a living while still finding the time to create quality content for your channel. Apparently some viewers may have assumed that You Tubers are all independently wealthy or something, but this vid certainly dispels any of those notions. This one really hit close to home, as I too work in the ready-mix industry, driving a "Front", like the guy at 0.53. I do recall on several occasions you mentioning being a concrete finisher, but couldn't get my mind around how you could be one while still managing to be such a nice guy at the same time ; )) Don't you know that being a miserable, loud-mouthed grump and an incessant complainer is a mandatory requirement to being a concrete finisher? Did you somehow miss that job requirement description all those years ago bud, lol? Seriously though, I am blessed to have some terrific finishers for my regular customers, many of whom not only do excellent work, but are also truly fine individuals - some who I actually consider friends. Btw, after driving commercially for 33 years, the last 17 of which were spent running Mixers, I will be starting the work week tomorrow in a brand new, never been used, state of the art $270k+ Oshkosh Front-Loader, very similar to the one in your vid - finally! (have been running the same old, pre-owned and worn-out Front for the last 8 years; pretty stoked, to say the least!) Many thanks to both you and Brooke for being such a blessing to me through your respective channels all these years - you guys really rock. AGVB

I am basically retired in my late 30s. I make most of my money through my rental properties. I however am not debt free, but I don't worry too much about debt. I have more than enough positive cash flow and even if ALL my properties were vacant at the same time I have enough savings to live on and pay the mortgages for 10 months before I HAVE to sell one of them. So, I am fine. I am waiting for my next opportunity as far as work is concerned. I have money set aside as well for my next property, when ever that comes, I'm not too worried about it. I love your videos and love your attitude. Keep doing what you love. I can't tell you how many people told me I couldn't retire young. "Oh, you can't retire before you're 40" Well, I did. I retired at 34ish. I say ish because at 34 I no longer had to work. I am 38 now, and unless someone offerers me something I can't turn down, I'm going to keep not working.

Watching concrete, now that brought back some memories. As things are at this stage in my life, I wish I moved to Alaska when I got out of the service. I used to be a "Structural Specialist" in the chairforce. Its a combined field of sheetmetal, wielding, carpentry, and masonry. I did A LOT of concrete in my early 20's. 200 x 300 ft ammo pads, taxiways for aircraft, you name it. On any average day, I probably saw at least 90 transit trucks going through the job site. I guess you could say I did so much concrete by volume, I hated it it. Raking concrete all day in "the pit", in front of a powerscreed for 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week. That really took it's toll on me. When I got out, I went back to school and got myself a desk job. That deskjob was been offshored to a foreign office about 5 years ago, and I'm always left wondering, "What if I had moved to Alaska and continued in the skills I learned in the military when i first got out, instead of going to school?" I will never know, but I like to think I'd have done well for myself.

Btw I'm Indian and am planning to come to the US nd just had a question that I thought you would have the answer to-which state has woods with the highest concentration of deer&other wildlife and amazing natural beauty at the same time? I'm guessing it gonna be Alaska!👋

I like your honesty. I live between Shawns real house and his cabin. I have a small channel with solar stuff because I lose power from the grid often. I really want to move north more but work is too busy and bills need to be paid. Thanks for sharing and welcome to check out some of my vids

Tomahawk, Wisconsin in the house! Well, sort of. A friend of ours, my brother, and I visited our other brother there back in '98. My brother lived next door to the paper mill back then. It's a neat little town. The first time I ever had cheese curds was in Tomahawk, WI! Anyway, thanks for sharing this little bit of info with us, and I look forward to your next video.

I worked all my life from 1979 to 2020. Now my decision to Semi Retired put into high gear was last year with the global pandemic. And honestly working from 1979 through 2020 after 41 straight years through high school and college and every day after. To be quite honest working over 41 years. I'm quite tired of the grind. Someone makes an offer to me on a part time basis I will grab it. I've earned it 41 long consecutive years of non stop working and corporate America
