Collecting Rain Water at an off grid cabin

In this video I collect a 55 gallon drum of fresh rain water at my cabin in interior Alaska during a hard rain storm.
Living off grid is so much easier with your own water source. Weather you're homesteading, or living in a tiny house, or just at the family cabin, a simple rain water collection system is easy to build and will fill many of your water needs.

@Patrick I'm in Chinada, and our local regional district has been discovered embezzling tax dollars and I am now pursuing other remedies. It's time for us to make local authorities accountable and transparent. This is why they hassle us with inspections that are not about safety, it's because they give the work to their contractor buddies for kickbacks.
Patrick 6 aylar önce
@Spinky L thank you for taking the time to reply! I appreciate the info!
Spinky L

@Patrick depends on the local inspector and the neighbors. Around where I am, they don't seem to bother about the actual codes as much as if you don't fill in the paperwork and pay the fees. And if a neighbor complains, they give you grief. In the end they put a note on the land title that makes it so insurance and banks won't touch it. If that matters. It does not matter to me.
Patrick 7 aylar önce
When you build a home off grid, do you have to follow local building codes? I'm extremely familiar with multiple trades and could do most the work myself.

Thank you for sharing your skills. I cant believe how much of this I’ve forgotten since living it as a kid. My parents and their parents were mountain people, who didn’t really care if the power ever went out! ;) Your videos give me a lot of pride in the skills I learned from them, especially when i recognize the same pail or tool that they used.

Hello, first of all, thank you for all the great and precious videos you've gifted us with about off the grid living ! May I ask what is that hand pump your using to take your shower. I guess it is used to build water pressure. What is its name please, and where do you usually find such a useful tool? Thanks in advance. :)

Ahhh thanks for this video, I was thinking about a system like this for a dry cabin in the Kenai. You answered a lot of my questions about how realistic it'd be. If I don't gotta dig a well for groundwater, then water doesn't seem so daunting anymore. You ain't kidding on the price of that endeavor either! Cheers.

That was beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing. Hey, I noticed you were using a Zodi for your shower. How do you like it? Does it provide enough water pressure to get the soap off? I've been thinking of getting one but not sure it would provide enough water pressure to really rinse well. Is your cook stove propane? Looks really nice and practical.
Bushradical 2 yıl önce
Yes its propane and the zodi works well... it can have a ton of pressure if you pump it up a lot

Hey old man! I liked you guys on alone. But now that I've discovered ya'll on TRpost I absolutely love ya'll. I really like that you guys are no BS practical! I especially like that you studied what you wanted. Then built the cabin the way you thought best, based on your situation. Being a real old man myself (not just old in wisdom like you) I have learned the hard way. To consider what others have done, use what I think appropriate from several sources. Then put it together the way that works for me. Thanks again for what you'll are doing and especially for sharing it with us. PS, I believe it is anywhere near fair the areas they put ya'll in. On the TV show alone. One person gets a relatively good area. Another gets a relatively good place. They should do more to level the field. Another thing that works against everyone. Is the tap out phone. I was an Army Aviator. Survivors after going down have no easy out. You figure it out or die. It's to much of a temptation to just quit when it gets hard. In a real survival situation, you don't have that choice it you want to live.

My ideal off-grid lifestyle, apparently, is totally enjoying watching certain other humans loving it. I heard stories from my grandparents where they would use their saw down on the lake when ice was thick . They would cut big blocks of ice and pack it in saw dust in root cellar and have ice through the summer . This was long ago when times were hard and the people had to be too . Have you thought about putting in a well by hand . You still have the cost of pipe but labor is usually the cost of a few beers at the end of the day . Love the videos keep going and enjoy the freedom of the great north . "Deeds not words"
